about the speaker
João Machado is a Brazilian director and visual artist floating between film and animation. Alongside his partners, he has led the multi-award winning The Youth, an independent production company and film directors collective based in Curitiba, Brazil. As an extension of that project he also formed COLOSSAL, a creative animation studio.
In the last three years, he has been recognized several times as a gold winner at CICLOPE Latino. His latest project, the mixed media short film Ashe Versus, was also awarded a film craft Gold Lion in animation, and Bronze Lion for editing at the Cannes Festival 2024.
With both Colossal and The Youth, João and his partners have been creating works with a singular visual appeal, and establishing themselves on the forefront of the craft in the new generation of Latin filmmakers and animators.

A mixed media project, Ashe Versus is an homage to Arthur Ashe’s unique style, on and off court. Combining voice recordings, photographs, and archival footage, the film celebrates his life and honors his enduring legacy. On this talk, YOUTH will approach how they turned an ordinary animation briefing into a disruptive mixed media and award winning film.
