The CICLOPE Asia Pacific 2026 Director of the Year, Patrick Fileti, creates films that blur the line between documentary and fiction, capturing moments that feel observed rather than staged. Born in Italy, raised in Spain and based in Australia, his cross-cultural upbringing and background in editing have shaped a filmmaking approach grounded in emotional truth. He has won a Titanium and Grand Prix Cannes Lions for WWF’s Earth Hour. His Coca-Cola film was inducted into MoMA, New York, and the Clio Hall of Fame. His documentary Inferno won Best Short Film at the Academy Award-qualifying Palm Springs International Film Festival.

At first glance, Go Mongolia looked like a tourism campaign. It wasn’t. The brief was far more ambitious: to create a film that would help Mongolians rediscover pride in their own country—not by showing them places they had never seen, but by helping them see familiar places with fresh eyes.
This session will explore how great filmmaking craft goes beyond aesthetics. At a time when technology makes it easier than ever for a single creator to work remotely and independently, Go Mongolia reminded us that understanding a culture still begins by being there—working alongside the people who know it best.
