Clare van Zyl is the MD and EP of Monkey Films and partner in the director-based company Monkey Direct. The local company represents renowned South African directors Leigh Ogilvie, Daniel Levi and feature film director Michael Matthews. An art history graduate, Clare worked as a producer in news and documentary for the BBC and Channel 4 during the early 1990s, moving to commercials’ film making in 2000 when she co-founded Monkey Films.
Through her long-standing relationships with global clients, Clare has created a substantial reputation for her company within the short-form film-making world. She has collaborated creatively with many top directors and agencies and produced commercials, music videos and feature films for her clients all over Africa. She was producer on Tim Greene’s feature ‘Boy Called Twist’ which premiered at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival in the Tous les Cinémas du Monde category.
More recently, Clare has happily collaborated with various influential South African artists to produce fine art film and sculpture installations and commissions. These works have been exhibited to great acclaim at the Venice Biennale, MOMA New York, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Athens and the Musée des Beaux-Artes, Brussels as well as at local galleries and museums. Many are in permanent museum collections. In this sphere she’s worked with Brett Murray, Sue Williamson, Mohau Modisakeng and Ed Young.
