Karl Wolfgang Epple, born 86 the son of a Samoan mother and a German father, dreamed of making movies from a very young age. To be precise, it was when Jurassic Park came out and he was six. Years later he became Executive Creative Director for the thjnk group, specialized in new business and creative excellence in advertising, finally working as an expert in moving images.

His client list includes Audi, Commerzbank, Der Spiegel, Deutsche Bahn, Haribo, IKEA, McDonald’s, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche Design, Škoda and Volkswagen. For most of them Karl was able to create some business changing work that has also been recognized with numerous national and international awards including Cannes Lions, New York Festivals, LIA, Clio, ADC, Eurobest and The One Show.

When judging the work of others he looks for ideas that understand culture in the same way as they impact it, he says. Karl himself is enthusiastic about pop culture, Asia and Instagram stories. He’s a member of some elite clubs, such as the Art Directors Club Germany, D&AD and Bayern München.

Besides his job in the agency and in award juries, Karl teaches at several universities and publishes columns and essays from his viewpoint on the industry.
