After two days of celebration and networking, the fifth edition of Ciclope Festival came to a close last Friday, 7th November, with an exclusive awards ceremony held at the unique Babylon cinema, in the heart of Berlin. During the event, more than 50 entries were rewarded and four of them won a Grand Prix: “Adventure Awaits” (by Blink), “The Bear and the Hare” (by Blinkink and Hornet Inc.), “Happy” (by Iconoclast) and “Iron Sky” (by Somesuch & Co).
Ciclope Festival 2014 was a success with more than 800 entries, 600 delegates (double the year before) and more than 100 people taking part in the networking activities Fresh Market and Service Market. “We are really proud of the way the festival has grown in the last few years”, says Francisco Condorelli, founder and executive director of Ciclope. “Not only because of the statistics, but also because we managed to gather works and people from countries that, until now, didn’t participate in the festival, such as Australia, Russia, China, New Zealand or Japan. Anyway, we now want to focus on the content and the quality of the event, rather than keep expanding on the number of guests and delegates”.
Starting this year, Ciclope Festival does not give away bronze, silver and gold medals, but it curates a collection of the very best in each category. In this edition, the festival received 804 entries in more than 20 categories divided into five sections: Live Action, Animation, Sound, Digital and Special Section. The jury panel, chaired by Marisa Clifford (Pulse Films), Michael Ritchie (Revolver and Will O’Rourke), Michael Di Girolamo (Station Film) and Johannes Ahlund (B-Reel) recognized 53 entries and awarded four Grand Prix: “Adventure Awaits” (by Blinkink), “The Bear and the Hare” (by Blinkink and Hornet Inc.), “Happy” (by Iconoclast) and “Iron Sky” (by Somesuch & Co).
During the festival, delegates from almost 100 companies (full production, digital, sound and post companies) had the chance to meet top creatives and producers in the Fresh Market and the Service Market, two original networking activities that took place in the morning of the 6th November. Right afterwards, the official program started with a talk by Georges Bermann, founder of Partizan, and later that day director Ringan Ledwidge participated in a public interview on stage. Nonetheless, the major highlight of the festival was the presence of Roman Coppola, on Friday 7th November. Interviewed by Peter Grasse (from Curious Film, Australia), the writer, director and producer went through his beginnings and his work at The Director’s Bureau.
After the awards ceremony –where the winning works were showcased– VIP guests had a celebration party at Soho House Berlin, the most exclusive hotel in the city. A high note closing for the only international conference and award show fully dedicated to the craft in moving image, that will come back to Berlin next year.
After Ciclope Festival’s scoring system (finalist = one point; winner = four points; Grand Prix = 7 points), the ranking per region for this year’s edition is as follows:

Best Visual Effects Company: Alt.vfx
Best Digital Company: Shenzhen Dans Digital

Best Production Company: MJZ

Congratulations to all! See you next year, on 5th and 6th November, in Berlin!
